Because I am utter pants at keeping this updated (mostly because I'm too damn lazy to log out of my main account and into this one), I've created [livejournal.com profile] roanefic for the purpose of doing what this account was supposed to. Namely, fic updates, fandom whinging, etc. I'll also probably start posting fic there too, for those of you who prefer to read and comment on LJ. This account isn't going away any time soon, it's just not going to get any new posts, so hop on over to LJ and follow me there! (Although, if someone knows of a way to crosspost between communities, I'll start a version of it here too. GOD I'm lazy.)

Title: Pull the Stars from the Sky (5/10)
Author: [personal profile] roane
Pairing(s): John/Sherlock
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~7,800 (this chapter, ~32K total so far)
Warnings: PTSD, drug addiction issues. WIP.

Summary: It’s the fall of 2000, and to help him out after his military career has ended due to injury, John Watson’s sister Harriet gets him a job as US tour manager for rising star of the industrial scene and enfant terrible, Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock’s not long out of rehab and there are plenty of doubts as to whether he’s serious about recovery. Plus, the music industry is shaking in its boots over the Napster mess. All John has to do is keep the money coming in and make sure his star doesn’t screw things up. After the army, that should be easy, right?

Author's Note: There are a lot of people who've helped with this: thanks to my fantastic betas emmadelosnardos, greywash, ardatli, and miraculousspaceship who have set me straight more times than I can count, already. Any mistakes are mine and not theirs. Also thanks to my Britpicker nichellen, and abundantlyqueer for soooo much military information and patience with my multitude of questions. And thanks to my anonymous music insider, you know who you are.

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5
fear_the_squee: We solve crimes, I blog about it, and he forgets his pants. (Default)
First off, chapter 5 is off to the betas! Hoping to post this weekend.

Also: several folks asked about what happened when Sherlock spent the night in Irene’s room. This is… not that scene. But it is what happened the day after the mirror-writing at the end of Chapter 3, when Sherlock and Irene spent the morning together.

Written almost entirely at the behest of [personal profile] greywash, who wanted to see Sherlock and Irene being girlfriends. ;)

(Entirely unbetaed. So, you know.)

Language, frank discussion of sex--what else do you expect of these two? )

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4
fear_the_squee: We solve crimes, I blog about it, and he forgets his pants. (Default)
Chapter 4 of Pull the Stars from the Sky has gone to beta, all 6,600+ words of it! I realized I don't do nearly enough stuff with this journal, so behind the cut is the first scene of chapter 4 for your sneaky viewing pleasure. :)

TOUCH HIM AGAIN AND I WILL SKIN YOU. )
fear_the_squee: We solve crimes, I blog about it, and he forgets his pants. (Default)
So I'm finally doing this!

10. The Short, Strange Life of Doctor John Watson (Rated M, Sherlock/Doctor Who @ 3,666 words/860 hits)
This is probably one of my favorites of the things I've written. It's not perfect, and I may rewrite bits at some point, because I think I left some things out, but I love it anyway. It's my first follow up to Mystery of the Runaway Bride, which is further down this list.

9. Blackmail (Rated T, Sherlock @ 373 words/975 hits)
I think this may have been my first prompt fic? [livejournal.com profile] findmeneverland asked for an episode fill for the scene where Lestrade supposedly filmed a drugged Sherlock on his phone. So I came up with this.

8. (Im)Patient (Rated T, Sherlock @ 221 words/1,132 hits)
One of my 221B ficlets, shamelessly schmoopy with a hint of hurt/comfort. Poor John.

7. Perchance to Dream (Rated G, Sherlock @ 389 words/1,690 hits)
Another prompt ficlet from [livejournal.com profile] findmeneverland. She's good with the prompts! This is probably the schmoopiest thing I've written. Sleeping in cabs and being adorable. Last I heard, someone was translating this into Chinese.

6. Flashpoint (Rated E, Sherlock @ 221 words/1,801 hits)
Oh look. It's the first explicit fic on this list. It only gets more explicit from here (except for #5)! This was a 221B prompt, last word 'Belfast'. I LOVE how it turned out, twining in bits of an imagined history for John and how a more BDSM-ish relationship might work between him and Sherlock.

5. The Mystery of the Runaway Bride (Rated T, Sherlock/Doctor Who @ 12,088 words/2,558 hits)
The very first fic I wrote beyond ficlets and short things. I am ridiculously proud of this universe, and I'm looking forward to going back to it. I'm a little sad that it doesn't get more attention than it does, but I know that's largely because it's a crossover and it's not slash. But... Donna! Casefic!

4. Pull the Stars from the Sky (Rated E, Sherlock AU @ 17,754 words/2,564 hits)
Current WIP. I'm estimating it will wind up at 50-60K when all is said and done. I am... kind of blown away at the reception this is getting. It already has more comments than anything else I've posted, and I'm barely a third of the way through. This is so so much fun to write, and I am learning SO much about myself as a writer. I am having the time of my life.

3. Denial (Rated E, Sherlock @ 6,482 words/4,782 hits)
2. Sublimation (Rated E, Sherlock @ 5,196 words/5,248 hits)
1. Displacement (Rated E, Sherlock @ 7,856 words / 5,973 hits)

Ah yes. The three Defence Mechanisms stories. My very very first attempt at writing slash, and my very first attempt at writing anything explicit for public consumption. I am, again, shocked at the response it's gotten. And it was my first lesson in JUST HOW POPULAR explicit fic is. The best thing about writing these stories has been all of the people I've met and gotten to know as a result, seriously. Another universe I'm looking forward to going back to. And also because, if I don't go back to it, I know at least one person who will hunt me down. :)

Yup. It's started. :)

Cellar Door recorded five of my 221B ficlets. I went on a small spree a week or so ago and dashed out several of them.

But OMG. She recorded them. I just... I'm flailing around like a goober. This is one of the coolest things to happen to me, writing-wise. And believe me when I say, there is some cool shit going on in my writing life right now. Like, "how is this my life?" levels of cool.

*rolls around on the ground*
fear_the_squee: We solve crimes, I blog about it, and he forgets his pants. (Default)
I discovered the 221B ficlet format this weekend. Well, not so much discovered. I was familiar with it before (exactly 221 words, last word starts with 'b'). But I wrote one. And then another. And then another. Those suckers are ADDICTIVE. It's like writing a haiku or sonnet, packing as much as you can into a very limited format. I've created a series for them at AO3.

  • "Love and Fear", G: Love and fear were this: John, in a darkened swimming pool, wrapped in a heavy winter's coat of plastic explosives and sweat with a murderer's words in his mouth.
  • "Flashpoint", R: Alive, and burning with it, with the near-kiss of death still at his mouth. One exchanged look, utter clarity. Bodies slamming against a wall, mouths biting.
  • "(Im)Patient", PG: John knows that the only thing worse than having a doctor for a patient is having a doctor's loved one for a patient.

I also got a pretty good start on what I've taken to calling the Giant Sex Drugs and Rock & Roll AU of Doom. (Listed on my WIP list as Someone to Watch Over Me--that title is growing more tentative as we speak.) Around 2,000 words of draft now, a bunch more in note form. I have no idea when this will be ready for posting, but I'm very excited about it. You can find bits of it posted on my Tumblr when the mood strikes me.

Author's Note: Thanks to [archiveofourown.org profile] roseredhoofbeats and [archiveofourown.org profile] emmadelosnardos not only for the beta work but also for listening to me whinge when John and Sherlock weren't behaving themselves properly. Third in the series Defence Mechanisms.

Well, in case you missed it from what I've been writing lately, I've been reading a LOT of Sherlock/John slash. One thing each of these stories has in common is that it made me go weak in the knees. That's probably not all they have in common, but I'll leave what the other items are as an exercise for the reader. I could seriously rec more than this, but this will do for a start.

Stringplay, [archiveofourown.org profile] PrettyArbitrary. Author says: "John secretly plays fiddle. Sherlock and his violin seduce him into a threesome."

Lisa says: Sometimes I'll read things that make me literally dizzy with the hotness of them. This is one of those things. Actually, just go read all of PrettyArbitrary's stuff, it'll save me the trouble of listing them all out. There's humor and sex and feelings all over the place. (Be warned though: "Cross Wired" is disturbing as HELL. I take no responsibility for your brain if you find yourself getting turned on by it.)

in deed accomplish our designs, [archiveofourown.org profile] greywash. Author says: When I don't touch you it's a mistake in any life, in each place and forever. Set after and in the same universe as "the sensation of falling as you just hit sleep"; orders of magnitude more plotless and filthy. WIP.

Lisa says: She lies like a lying thing. There's a plot, and a good one too. Of course, this being the fabulous greywash, there's a lot of very explicit sex, but it's NOT typical fanfic sex. There're misunderstandings, things don't always work, and so on. Also a lot of John and Sherlock trying to negotiate what it actually means, now that they're in a relationship. She's brilliant, and I kind of hate her for it.

Performance in a Leading Role, [archiveofourown.org profile] Mad_Lori. Author says: Sherlock Holmes is an Oscar winner in the midst of a career slump. John Watson is an Everyman actor trapped in the rom-com ghetto. When they are cast as a gay couple in a new independent drama, will they surprise each other? Will their on-screen romance make its way into the real world?

Lisa says: OMG. Fluffy and beautiful and romantic and it SHOULD NOT WORK, but it does. And it's full of some serious meta about the film industry, which was fascinating. This is a fandom classic for a reason.

If Metal Had a Choice and The Overflow, [archiveofourown.org profile] anarmydoctor.

Author says: "If Metal Had a Choice": "Sherlock has his heart in the throat when he says Take my hand, and the metal of their handcuffs shines proud and thankful, because that’s the instant, that’s the second, that’s the reason why if metal had a choice, its choice would be now and here."

"The Overflow": "And sex, our sex, you and I having sex, is just the dirty negotiation between your pace and mine, between your flow and mine sharing the same track, and when that happens, when we converge, then we are stronger, mightier than ever, we are a torrent, and that’s the point of no return, the overflow."

Lisa says: anarmydoctor is a poet. Seriously. I have never read anyone who uses words the way she does. She claims it's because English is not her first language, and okay maybe. But still. Absolutely stunning. My only complaint is that I wish she wrote MORE.

I'm about two-thirds of the way through An Avalanche of Detour Signs by gyzym and it is just LOVELY. Molly Hooper is one of my favorite characters, and this novel-length fic is--so far--doing right by her. And pairing her with Lestrade in a heartbreaking and very realistic way. I do believe I've found my second ship. :)
